Techniques in Golden Retriever Grooming
One-to-One instruction, guidance and lots of hands-on practice to learn the various methods & techniques of how to bath, dry, enhance and present your Golden Retriever for the show ring_ or to create a beautifully trimmed pet to be proud of :~ skills acquired apply to many other breeds.
During your individually tailored teaching day you will receive specialist instruction plus:
- Lots of opportunity to work on different Golden Retrievers to learn to achieve a natural effect and competent scissoring as well as handling and control. ( Same techniques can be used for other double coated and feathered breeds, such as Flats, Collies, Newfs, BMDs, Shepherds & Setters, Spaniels etc)
- Detailed step by step tuition on how to do ears / necks / shoulders / capes / chests / fronts / trousers / leg feathering / tails / skirts / pasterns / feet and nails. With a brief description of basic anatomy and conformation to understand structure and balance needed to help aim to create the perfect dog!!
- Guidance in how to do a quick routine health assessment and body condition check.
- Learn & Practice skills in Bathing, Drying, Moulding, Brushing, Slickering, Combing, Carding, Handstripping & use of a ‘coat-king’/ tools / chalk / glove to rid of dead or unwanted excessive undercoat, topcoat , sprouts, fluff & guard hairs. Plus Cleaning ears & teeth and 3wayCutting Nails.
- Watch and follow Demonstrations on Thinning & Trimming and Blending procedures and Techniques needed to enhance and beautify your Golden Retriever for the show ring , to tidy as a pet , or for practicality if neutered. Emphasis on natural silhouetting with no clipping or heavy sculpturing.
- All aspects of grooming your Golden will be covered during the day – the amount of time you need to practice on each factor is dependent on your own previous experience, expertise level and ability in understanding the various concepts, in handling the dogs you work on and on your personal competence in using scissors and to undertake each task to master the desired standard of finish.
** Tea , Coffee and Squash supplied during the day as needed!!
** Please bring your own packed lunch and extra cold drinks.
INTENSIVE ONE DAY COURSE (7 hours)
Time: 10 am – 17.30 with a half hour break for lunch.

SPECIAL 3 DAY Canine Beautician’s Course (21 hours)
This 3 day course gives lots of opportunity for live practice on the handling, techniques, bathing, drying, trimming, thinning, carding, and the skills needed to achieve a superior finish on many breeds. Plus the care and use of various tools and equipment. Basic Health & Safety aspects are also covered.

You will also need to bring your own grooming equipment – and MUST have with you :
a metal comb, a wire slicker brush ( eg. Universal / Lawrence), nail clippers, small feet scissors ( approx. 12cm / 5”) for fine detailed work, long straight scissors for tails ( approx. 21cm / 8”) , single sided thinning scissors (42/46 teeth best), double sided thinning scissors ( with 30-32 teeth), (“Roseline” are a good brand of Scissors for Goldens).
All other tools will be provided.
Grooming to a superior standard of perfection is an art and a skill! Speed and competence increases with confidence and experience.
Having an “eye” for a dog and appreciation of shape can take time to acquire and develops over a period of time.
